Christmas on Oak Creek.

in Fishing Reports

Spent Christmas week with the family, creek side in Oak Creek Canyon. We stayed for the week and I especially enjoyed not having any cell reception, TV’s, or internet. It’s often hard to get into the Christmas spirit in 70 degree weather and shorts, so it was nice to sit back and enjoy the cold weather with plenty of wood to burn in the fire place while 6″ of snow fell. I did not get a lot of fishing in however I did manage to sneak out for a few hours and land a few fish in while we were there.

Here is a picture I took while fishing the morning after the storm. The cabin we stayed in is on the left.

Hi, Im Jon and I’m 25,
So im farely new to fly fishing but I grew up fishing all of nothern New Mexico and Colorado. I pretty much love trout fishing more than other kinds of fishing but i’m not entirely impartial. However, Im just learning in the past few years of the amazing fishing in Arizona. In the past two months my schedule has just become completely decisive on me. YES! So…. I like your blogs, AND being somewhat new to fly fishing I am completely absorbed in learning everything I can… (some called me obsessive over fishing in general growing up.. I admit to it. Some things just appeal more to some people) … I do like insight from people, such as yourself, who seem to know this area well. What kind of flies do you fish in the winter when its so butt cold? Haha. I mean I’m the type of guy who would fish in 9 degree weather.. like you.. but I guess you could say I need to learn how to fish better . At least with flies.. is there something I can buy that youd suggest or maybe a site that helps? I mean I know to look under rocks and shore for warmer months with hatches and all that but I do realize that Arizona is a state that you can fish all year long. I want to be able to read a river no matter what time or season so I can relate, if you will, and get the patterns down pat. I got the time and I make decent money so I do have more opportunity than most I believe, to really just jump in . Tell me what you think. I could literally watch the ESPN version of Fly Fishing as much as I watch ESPN during football season, which is…… alot. Ha. It just appeals to me. Larry Czonkas North to Alaska? I dig that. Thanks for your time. Keep up the Blogs.

Sincerley..
Jon.

Hi Joh, Glad to hear you are really getting into fly fishing. I will shoot you an email with more information but the key is to get out on the water and just start learning what works for you. I would recommend the book, “Arizona Trout Streams and Thier Hatches”.
